This coin celebrates a Ukrainian folk song, the author of which is known. After Russia’s vicious war on Ukraine, this song is sung with renewed vigor as a modern symbol of Ukraine’s indomitability and resistance to Russian invasion. Ukrainian songs are brilliant poetic stories, and a spiritual and moral treasury of the Ukrainian people. It is from songs that the good, generous and beautiful souls of Ukrainians speak. Songs reflect ideals, such as love for the homeland, rejection of any oppression, courage and bravery in fighting the enemy. “Oh, the Guelder-Rose in the Meadow” is one such song, as its history is the history of the Ukrainian people. This folk song, which has been known since Cossack times in the XVII century, was developed, added to and given a new meaning during the Ukrainian revolution in the early 20th century. It is now sung worldwide in different languages, uniting Ukrainians with previous generations of freedom fighters in Ukraine.
Obverse: against a smooth background, to the left, is Ukraine’s small coat of arms; in the center, there is a stylized symbolic composition: different generations of defenders: a Cossack, a Sich rifleman, and a modern soldier of the Ukrainian Armed Forces are raising a guelder-rose – a poeticized symbol of Ukraine, the crown of which resembles the outlines of Ukraine’s borders; above is the following semicircular legend: А МИ ТУЮ ЧЕРВОНУ КАЛИНУ ПІДІЙМЕМО (But we will raise that red guelder-rose up), beneath are the coin’s issue year – 2022 and the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); to the right are the coin’s face value – 5 and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia; to the right, under the coin’s face value, is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: against a smooth background, above is the semicircular legend that continues the song: А МИ НАШУ СЛАВНУ УКРАЇНУ, ГЕЙ, ГЕЙ, РОЗВЕСЕЛИМО! (And we will cheer up our glorious Ukraine, hey, hey, cheer up!); in the center is a branch with guelder-rose leaf and berries.
