Dedicated to the important phenomenon of European culture - the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. The formal beginning of the religious and social movement in Europe from the sixteenth to mid-seventeenth centuries was linked to the speech of the German reformer, the doctor of the theology of the Wittenberg University, Martin Luther, who, in 1517, published his famous 95 theses aimed at the practice of selling indulgences (exemption from sin, granted by the Church) and emphasized that one achieves 'salvation of the soul' (or 'justification') not through the church and its rites, but through the faith given directly to him by God. The influence of the Reformation on the Ukrainian lands was manifested in the democratization of the church, its approach to the people, the process of creating national schools, printing houses, the translation of the Bible and liturgical books in Ukrainian.
On the obverse there is a coin: the upper - the Small State Emblem of Ukraine, under which the inscriptions: УКРАЇНА / 5 ГРИВЕНЬ, to the right - the year of issue of the coin 2017; on a mirror background - a cross, on the left - a stylized leaf of the unfolded Bible, translated into German by Martin Luther, with a decorative bookmark with a Ukrainian ornament, symbolizing Ukraine's involvement in the pan-European process of creating a new church. To the right of the cross there are five theses that are the quintessence of this theology: ONLY / WORD / ONLY / VIRA / ONLY / THANKS / ONLY / CHRIST / ONLY / GOD'S GLORY; The logo of the Banknote-Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (bottom right).
On the reverse, the coin is placed on a red-and-white background (used tampon printing), symbolizing the drama of that time, the crucifixion, to the right - Martin Luther, who holds a sheet with his theses in his hand, and the inscriptions: MARTIN / LUTER (top), 500 ROCKS / REFORMATION (vertically to the left).
