Compagnie Universalle Du Canal Interoceanique de Panama, or The Universal Company of the Panama Interoceanic Canal is a French company created to build the Panama Canal. The Universal Company of the Interoceanic Canal of Panama was created on October 20 , 1880 by Ferdinand de Lesseps to build the Panama Canal. The Universal Company issued between 1882 and 1888 seven series of bonds, in the form of bearer securities of the Universal Company of the Panama Intra-Oceanic Canal . Originally, in order not to frighten subscribers, Ferdinand de Lesseps had announced a construction cost of the Panama Canal of 600 million francs. At the last subscription, it had spent, including the capital in shares, 1,335,000,000 francs. Short of cash, the Universal Company is launching a new series of bonds on December 2, 1888 but which did not meet with any success. She must then stop her payments.
