This coin celebrates an important global sporting event – the XXIV Olympic Winter Games, which will be held in the Chinese capital of Beijing in February 2022. The Olympic Games are prestigious international competitions that are global events, it would be no exaggeration to say. They are organized by the International Olympic Committee for the Olympic Movement. Ukraine’s national team will compete in the following sports: biathlon, alpine skiing, speed skating, curling, cross-country skiing, Nordic combined, ski jumping, sledding, skeleton and bobsleigh, snowboarding, figure skating, freestyle skating, puck hockey, and short track speed skating.
Obverse: above is Ukraine’s small coat of arms, below which is the semicircular legend УКРАЇНА (Ukraine); in the center in a smooth circle is a pad-printed head of a dragon, which is the main character of many ancient legends, myths, fairy tales and one of the most famous symbols of China; in the center is also the legend 2022 stylized to look like a snake-like dragon covered with scales; to the left and right are the four pictograms symbolizing Olympic sports; beneath are the coin’s face value 2 and the graphic symbol of the hryvnia; under the legend 2022 is the mint mark of the NBU’s Banknote Printing and Minting Works.
Reverse: against the backdrop of a stylized outline of a sheet of paper is a composition symbolizing the country that hosts the XXIV Winter Olympic Games – China, which has an ancient culture, one element of which is paper; in the center is a map of Beijing with pictograms of a snowboarder and a figure skater; to the right of the composition is a fan – an integral part of traditional Chinese culture, the first records of fans date back to between the 4th and the 2nd centuries BCE. In addition, the reverse features a snowflake (beneath), and the logotype of the National Olympic Committee of Ukraine (to the left), above which are a dragon’s head and flames – a symbol of the Olympic Games.
