Dedicated to the Mykolayiv Astronomical Observatory Research Institute, one of the oldest observatories in Eastern Europe, founded in 1821 as a naval observatory to provide the Black Sea Fleet with time, maps, and training naval officers in astronomical orientation. The history of the Nikolaev Observatory is connected with the decision of an important task in astronomy - creation of the celestial Fundamental coordinate system consisting in creation of a series of Fundamental catalogs which became result of collective efforts of observatories of the world made on the basis of millions of separate supervision . The main activities of the modern institution are the study of near-Earth objects, the dynamics of the bodies of the solar system, the creation of astrometric catalogs of stars, information support for astronomical research and astronomical instrumentation.
On the obverse of the coin, on the background of a stylized fragment of the globe, there are: the small State Emblem of Ukraine (above), inscriptions: 2021 (above the coat of arms), УКРАЇНА (under the coat of arms); in the center - the historical building of the Nikolaev astronomical observatory which has a special design, an original round hall, a laying, etc .; face value - П’ЯТЬ ГРИВЕНЬ (bottom in a semicircle); logo of the Mint of the National Bank of Ukraine (right).
